    *Johan Petter

* John, the son of Karl-Magnus Lindgren (1845-1897) and Stina-Kajsa (1847-1942), was born 10 July 1874 in Flybo, Sweden . For many years, John's father owned a small farm in Smaland, one of Sweden 's most diversified provinces. This "province of forests and lakes, of stony patches of tilled ground, of red coloured lingonberry tufts, the province of beautiful timbered houses and wooden churches and of fairy-tales and legends" strengthened John physically while it kindled his imagination. John, at age 19, decided to travel to the United States in hopes of finding gainful employment and as so many immigrants, with dreams of making his fortune. Arriving at Ellis Island in April 1893, he traveled to a Swedish settlement in Minnesota where he stayed with friends and relatives while searching for employment. Minnesota was similar in many ways to his native Sweden . "Miles of murmuring forests where [one] can walk over the soft green moss and collect mushrooms or berries for hours without seeing another human being. Yet [where one can] find elk. deer and grouse." Finding work with his Swedish relatives, the Tabors, he began what was to be a near life time career in railroad construction. Like his ancestors, the Vikings, who had during the Viking Age, produced iron in the marsh lands of Smaland, John was intrigued by the feel, texture and strength of iron - iron which forged the great iron horses of America and the rails which supported their weight.  Still remaining a foreign citizen, John continued to work in the U.S. until 27 February 1896 when he applied for American citizenship. This application was submitted in Washington County, Minnesota . It wasn't until 27 October 1904 that he applied, in Spokane , Washington , for his second set of citizenship papers. During this period, through determination and Swedish hard work, he became a railroad construction contractor, traveling throughout the Midwest and Western states. After a two year waiting period, he finally became an American citizen on 9 November 1906 . His citizenship papers were recorded in Spokane on that date.  During this early period in Lindgren's life, he traveled frequently between the States and Sweden visiting family. On one such occasion, returning from Sweden , he purchased a ticket to America at the Liverpool , England ship-lines in hopes of proceeding to the States the following morning. One can well imagine his frustration when arriving at the docks only to discover that the ship had sailed some fifteen minutes earlier. The ship, he had by fate missed boarding, was the ill-fated "Titanic."  Shortly, thereafter he left Liverpool on the "Carpathia" which had just returned with the Titanic’s 705 survivors. As Lindgren later stated, as they reached the location where the liner had sunk, they threw flowers and wreathes into the cold murky waters singing "Nearer my God to Thee." Edna Lindgren Moretz Hileman, one of John's children, recalls how in later years he would always cry whenever he heard the song or recalled the tragic story.  After returning to the States and working for several more years, he sent for his younger brother Ed to come and live with him. Ed, like his brother John was mechanically inclined and soon began working along-side his brother in railroad construction. Their primary expertise was excavating through mountains and constructing rail tunnels.
