With technology growing everyday it is hard to keep up. Less than seven years ago the fastest PC on the market had a 233MHz processor and cost over 2000 dollars. Now you can buy a computer with over a 2GHz processor for less than a 1000 dollars. As computers get bigger and faster the Operating Systems and software that we use are getting bigger and better. Meaning that they take up more space on the hard drive and use more of the systems resources. So in order to run the new programs or play the new games we are forced to upgrade our current system or buy a new one. But how do we know when to upgrade or when to buy a new computer? Well that's what I'm going to try to help you with.
The first thing you need to look at is the age of the computer. If the computer is over five years old is it worth upgrading.
The second thing to look at is it's use. Do you use it to surf the web or do you use it to perform high end task like gaming. If you just want to surf the web and check email you don't need a fast computer. If you use it for high end task you need a faster computer.
The third thing to look at is cost. How much will it cost you to upgrade your computer? Can you by a new computer for about the same price? Don't spend 500 dollars on a old system upgrade if you can buy a new one for 600. With an upgrade on a older system you are just buying time. Eventually you will out grow that system and need to purchase a new one anyway.
The last thing to consider is to go ahead and upgrade what you have. Say that I am running out of hard drive space. Now I can go buy a new computer for 600 dollars or I can buy another hard drive for less than a 100 dollars. The upgrade will make sense here. Now say I need more memory. I can upgrade the memory for less than a 100 dollars and increase my computers performance by 30%. Now lets say I need a bigger hard drive, new modem, more memory and a faster processor. I could upgrade this computer and spend about 400 to 500 dollars because my mother board need to be replaced to handle the new processor or I could buy a newer computer that's twice as fast as the one I have for around 600 dollars.
The point here is that you need to take time and think about your needs now and what you will need in the future. You can spend a little more now and save a lot later on.
Keep in mind that when you purchase a new computer or computer product that at some point you will need some support. It may be in your best interest to go with someone local.
