THE WORKS OF DR. P. B. RANDOLPH
A Partial Indexing of Randolph's Work by Dr. Carl Edwin Lindgren
Member, Royal
Historical Society (London)
![]()
For additional research note the American National Biography biographical entry Randolph, Paschal Beverly by Dr. Lindgren. “The ACLS and Oxford University Press are pleased to announce the publication of the American National Biography (ANB). The ANB is a 24-volume collection of approximately 17,500 biographies of significant individuals in American history. It is one of the most significant historiographical works of this generation … The American National Biography was released in print in January 1999; the electronic version was released in January 2000.” “The ANB is the winner of the 1999 Dartmouth Medal Award and the American History Association's Waldo G. Leland Prize for 2001.” http://www.anb.org/aboutanb.html
Over a relatively short span of 25 years, Paschal Beverly Randolph (1825-1875) published numerous books, pamphlets, and reprints. These works covered the arcane domain of magic mirrors, after death, the spirit world, sexual energies, Rosicrucian philosophy, occultism (secret knowledge), the tobacco habit, clairvoyance and the Freedmen Reform Movement. It is now, quite impossible to index all of these works as some no longer exist except in obscure private libraries.
Every effort was used to obtain copies of Randolph's works through inter-library loans and the Internet. Still, many books remain un-indexed. It is hoped, however, that some energetic history student would be interested in carrying on this archival pursuit.
Randolph's dream was that all his works would "live" for many years after his short tragic death. This he spoke of many times throughout his books. Such, however, was not to be the case. This, has proven to be a literary tragedy to all readers of mystic and reform movement texts.
Today, the most complete libraries of Randolph's works exist at the library of Beverly Hall in Quakertown and Attorney John Patrick Deveney's private library. Other private collectors in New York, London and the Near East have near complete collections. The search, however, still continues for the few elusive works which remain lost.
